Overview

An award-winning company specialising in the distribution of best-of-breed wireless products required a cost-effective method of protecting itself from regular power outages.  shentongroup provided the company’s rural premises in Oxfordshire with an Uninterruptible Power Supply System, further supported by Power Call Emergency Generator Rental.

The Problem

A common predicament for many UK businesses located in rural settings, power outages are a regular occurrence.  With the UK experiencing some of the lowest National Grid reserve power levels in recent years, the problem is unlikely to ease any time soon.

Selcom Ltd, now rebranded as Purdicom, have a rural location near Wantage, Oxfordshire.  It was suffering from regular power outages, sometimes lasting half a day meaning that Selcoms’ business was being severely affected.  Selcoms’ Hugh Garrod explained the initial steps taken to tackle the problem: “I investigated standby generators but found the cost to be thousands”.

Solution

shentongroup’s Strategic Director, Richard Meek, commented on the client’s requirements: “There is a continuous power supply solution for almost every size and type of business and shentongroup provided Selcoms with a cost-effective, yet reliable continuous power solution”.  Richard continued: “Not every company needs their own standby generators and we devised and delivered a solution that comprises an Uninterruptible Power Supply System, in conjunction with shentongroup’s Power Call Emergency Generator Rental service”.

When a power cut occurs, the 3kVA UPS system instantly steps in to supply battery backup power whilst Power Call’s 24/7 control room rapidly despatches an emergency backup generator from a local depot.  Upon arrival, the delivery engineer connects the generator to the pre-fitted connection point and advises the customer to switch over to the generator.

An indicator lamp is fitted to the changeover switch to advise the customer when the mains power is restored.

Outcomes

“shentongroup couldn’t have been more helpful” confirmed Hugh Garrod, and added that the solution “is costing us only a fraction of the amount of a standby generator over the three years of the contract”.

“shentongroup has done an amazing job”, added Hugh. “Now we can maintain continuity when power cuts occur as lighting, IT equipment, telephones, heating and air conditioning are all supported by the UPS and the Power Call service.  We are extremely impressed with the company and its service, support and expertise”.

The solution has saved Selcoms capital expenditure and the challenges of siting, maintaining and refuelling a standby generator.  However, the company can continue to work hard and in the knowledge that in the increasingly probable event of a power outage, there will be no break to their award-winning, market-leading business.
